Crannog by the Water

See the crannog as it would have been experienced

Step beyond the village and onto the loch.

Following your visit to the Scottish Crannog Centre, this guided Iron Age canoe journey offers a new perspective on the landscape you’ve just explored, taking the story out onto the water itself.

Travel across Loch Tay by rafted canoe and experience the crannog from the loch, as people once would have approached it centuries ago.

This is a 2-hour guided canoe journey on Loch Tay, running directly after your Crannog Centre tour.  Launching from the village shoreline, you’ll travel across the loch in a rafted canoe, creating a stable and social platform for the journey.

Along The Way We Explore:

The crannog village from the water

Nearby submerged archaeological crannog sites

A journey towards Priory Island

The wider landscape and stories of Loch Tay

A return paddle back to the Crannog Centre

Rather than simply travelling across the water, this journey invites you to experience the loch as part of the wider story, connecting landscape, movement, archaeology, and place in a way that builds naturally on your time in the village.

What To Expect:

A relaxed guided journey at an easy pace

No previous paddling experience required

Stable rafted canoes for comfort and confidence

Small group sizes for a more personal feel

Optional opportunities to paddle independently in pairs on calmer days

You’ll be accompanied by a qualified guide throughout, providing both safety and interpretation on the water.

Practical Details:

Price: £65 per person

Duration: 2 hours

Departures: Up to three daily departures aligned with Crannog Centre tour times

All equipment is provided, including buoyancy aids.

This is generally a dry activity, so most guests simply wear comfortable outdoor clothing suitable for the weather. Waterproofs can be provided if required.  Access in and out of the canoe is managed carefully to minimise getting wet, although a small splash is always part of loch life.

Bookings can be made in advance or on the day, subject to availability.

Weather & Conditions:

Journeys run in most weather conditions and are adapted to ensure comfort and safety on the water.  In periods of strong winds or unsuitable conditions, trips may be cancelled and fully refunded.

A Shared Journey guided by WildEmber Bothy in partnership with the Scottish Crannog Centre, this journey is designed to sit naturally alongside your visit, offering a deeper connection to Loch Tay and the stories held within its landscape.

Spaces are limited on each departure.Advance booking is recommended, although same-day spaces may occasionally be available through the Crannog Centre team on site.
